The origin stories of Genesis 1-11 go back to the traumatic history of the Ancient Hebrews, having just escaped slavery. The God revealed in Genesis heals their wounded identity. But for many, these chapters are no longer a source of healing. Where the church has had power, Genesis 1-11 has been weaponized against people and used to defend power. How do we repair our relationship to these origin stories such that they can still speak to us? How can these scriptures contribute to mending our relationships to self, work, sexuality, sin, ancestors, judgment, and culture? Ultimately, this is not just about repairing our relationship with Genesis. It’s about repairing our ability to trust God, to trust one another’s use of God’s words, to trust our own decision to follow the way of Jesus, to live wholeheartedly into what we believe to be true about God’s world.
