When the world feels unstable, unjust or hopeless, we can begin to feel limited in our response to it. Often we feel pulled to fight, accommodate those in power, or withdraw. Jesus offers another way. Through the kingdom parables in Matthew Jesus shows us how to answer uncertainty, oppression, and fear with something better: forgiveness, dignity, generous celebration, justice, and care for those with the least. This way is what indigenous theologian Cheryl Bear calls “Creator’s good road.” In order to walk this road we need the Spirit’s help to invigorate our imaginations for what is possible, helping us to see what seeds of the kingdom might already be in our hands. This fall, artists from our community will help us encounter these familiar stories with fresh eyes and senses. Each week we will consider the parables in Matthew through the lens of a different artistic offering.
